Privacy Policy

The short version: Dusk collects nothing about you and has no accounts, analytics or trackers. It connects to the internet for two things only: to ask our server for a signed list of new wallpapers, which you can switch off, and to check a Dusk Plus licence key if you buy one. The Mac App Store build does neither. It handles a purchase through Apple instead, and cannot fetch wallpapers at all.
Who this is from
Dusk ("the app") is made and distributed by Dinesh Kumar ("we", "us"), an independent developer. This policy explains how the app handles information. If you have questions about it, write to hello@ultrabasiclabs.com.
Information we collect
None. Dusk does not collect, transmit, sell, share or store personal information. Specifically, the app contains:
- no analytics or telemetry of any kind;
- no crash or diagnostic reporting;
- no advertising identifiers or ad networks;
- no third-party SDKs, frameworks or trackers;
- no accounts, sign-in, or user profiles;
- no cookies (the app is not a web application).
Fetching new wallpapers
The version downloaded from this website can fetch new wallpapers without you installing an update. To do that it periodically asks a single HTTPS address for a signed list of new pieces.
- What we send: an ordinary HTTPS GET. The only thing identifying the request is a header naming the app and its version, for example
Dusk/1.0. There is no account, no device identifier, no usage data and no cookie. - What we receive: a small JSON document listing wallpapers, signed with our key. Dusk verifies that signature before reading the contents, so a modified or third-party list is discarded.
- What is stored: the wallpaper list is cached inside the app's own folder so it works offline. Nothing about you is stored, because nothing about you is sent.
- Turning it off: switch off "Receive new wallpapers" in Settings and Dusk stops asking.
Your web server necessarily sees the IP address that any request comes from, as every web server does. We keep no analytics on top of that and build no profile from it.
Buying Dusk Plus
Payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy, who act as the merchant of record. We never see or store your card details. Their handling of your payment and billing details is governed by Lemon Squeezy's privacy policy.
- Activating a key: when you paste a licence key into the version downloaded from this site, Dusk sends that key and the name of your Mac, as set in System Settings, to Lemon Squeezy so the activation can be tied to that machine and you can move it later. Nothing else is sent, and no usage data ever is.
- Afterwards: Dusk stores the key and the activation identifier locally and works offline. It re-checks the key with Lemon Squeezy occasionally so a refunded or released key stops unlocking Plus. If it cannot reach them, Plus keeps working.
- Releasing a Mac: "Release this Mac" in Settings tells Lemon Squeezy to free that activation and deletes the key from the app.
- In the Mac App Store version: Plus is an in-app purchase handled entirely by Apple. No licence key exists, nothing is sent to us or to Lemon Squeezy, and what Apple collects is covered by Apple's privacy policy.
The Mac App Store version
That build is compiled without the wallpaper feed and ships without the network entitlement, so macOS itself prevents it from opening any connection. It receives new wallpapers through ordinary App Store updates instead.
What is stored on your Mac
Dusk saves your own preferences locally so it can restore them the next time you open it. This information never leaves your computer, and we have no access to it.
- Settings. Your chosen wallpaper, per-wallpaper colour and motion adjustments, frame rate, quality, shuffle interval and similar options, saved in the app's own preferences store.
- Generated wallpaper images. If you enable "Match Lock Screen wallpaper", Dusk renders a still image of your current wallpaper into its own Application Support folder and asks macOS to use it as the system desktop picture. The image is generated on your Mac from the app's own artwork; it contains nothing about you.
- The wallpaper list. The signed list of delivered pieces described above, cached in the app's own folder so the library survives being offline. It contains artwork definitions only.
- Dusk Plus licence key. If you buy Plus from this website, the key you paste in is stored in the app's preferences, along with the activation identifier our payment provider returns, so you do not have to enter it again.
- Generated wallpaper video. In the version downloaded directly from this website, the optional "Live Lock Screen (beta)" feature renders a looping video of your wallpaper and places it into the macOS wallpaper video folder on your Mac, keeping a backup of the file it replaces. This happens entirely on your computer. This feature is not included in the Mac App Store version.

What Dusk does not access
Dusk does not read your documents, photos, contacts, calendars, messages, location, camera, microphone, clipboard or browsing history, and does not request permission to do so. It renders its own artwork mathematically on your graphics hardware; it does not need your files and never opens them.
Children
Dusk is suitable for all ages and does not collect information from anyone, including children under 13. Because no information is collected from any user, no information is collected from children.
If you bought Dusk through the Mac App Store
Any purchase, download or subscription is handled entirely by Apple under Apple's privacy policy. We never see your payment details. Apple may provide us with anonymous, aggregated sales and crash statistics that cannot identify you; we cannot link any of it to an individual, and we receive nothing that you have not already agreed to share with Apple.
This website
This site is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no analytics and asks for no personal information. It loads a web font from Google Fonts, which means your browser requests a font file from Google's servers; that request is subject to Google's privacy policy. Whoever hosts these pages may also keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses) as part of normal operation.
Your rights
Privacy laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, delete or port the personal data a company holds about you, and to object to its sale. We hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to retrieve, amend, delete or sell. We do not sell or share personal information, because we never receive any. If you would like written confirmation of this, just ask.
Changes to this policy
If a future version of Dusk ever changes how it handles information, we will update this page and change the "last updated" date above before that version is released. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
